Behavioural Consultation Face to Face
If you are experiencing any behavioural issues with your dog or dogs, this Consultation is designed to help you. Many of my more extreme cases are taken as referrals from Veterinary Practices who send clients to me to get help with many different behaviours. I also work with clients all over the country by remote consultations.
SOME OF THE BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS I CAN HELP WITH
- Reactivity towards other dogs this may be mild or it may be a full blown aggressive response. Behaviours always escalate, so it is much better to seek help as soon as possible.
- Reactivity towards people from mild reactivity to more aggressive reactions including dogs with a bite history.
- Resource guarding
- Separation anxiety
- Fear related responses, whether this to noise or any other cause.
- Problems resulting from lack of socialisation or incorrect socialisation.
- Working with issues in multi-dog households.
- Issues with toilet training.
- Working with dogs pre and post spaying or neutering.
- Helping with anxiety and issues due to phantom pregnancies.
- General anxiety, fear, or nervousness.
- Problems with toilet training.
- Car sickness and not wanting to go into the car.
- General training problems such as lack attention lack of recall, pulling on the lead,
- Chasing issues whether this is cars, joggers, sheep, horses.
- Dogs who are ‘shutdown’ and depressed.
- Over arousal (over excitement) leading to unwanted behaviour such as lack of recall, barking, jumping up and mouthing.
- Fear of going to the vets.
During the consultation I will help you understand why your dog is displaying the behaviour and work with you to give you the ‘tools’ to help you both control and then help change the behaviour through practical management and achievable exercises.
HOW THE BEHAVIOURAL CONSULTATION WORKS - As every issue needs a different approach I tailor each consultation to the individual dog. Please note that a lot of the work I do is background work analysing why your dog is practicing the behaviours as this is essential in order for me to help, and in the report which gives a lot of detailed exercises and practical ways to manage and work to solve the behaviours.
How the Consultation works.
After the initial contact call to discuss your dog or dogs I will ask you fill in a detailed questionnaire online. This is easy to do as it is part of the booking process. For clients who prefer to be sent the form by email please let me know and I can arrange this.
Having read the questionnaire I will contact you by phone and/or email with some initial exercises to start, and any management changes that will help or are advised for safety. For instance this may help with resource guarding, or reactive dogs.
I will then arrange a date for the consultation, ideally when everyone who is involved with your dog are present.
Face to face consultations generally last around 3 hours.
For online consultations I break the session into two sessions of around 1.5 hours each (to avoid information overload and screen fatigue).
After the first consultation I will send you a report covering all the areas we discussed at the consultation, the initial exercises to work with, any advice on safety management if needed, plus general information to help.
Changing behaviour takes time, every dog and every case is different so it is crucial to work at the dog's pace. If a dog is very anxious or reactive, we need to spend time helping the dog to reduce overall stress and feel safe before they are able to learn and we can start to change behaviours. So as part of the package I will work with you over the next two to three months (sometimes longer if needed) offering ongoing help and support to continue to work with changing the behaviours. After the initial consultation and report, I will schedule a second consultation usually in one to two weeks, by face time or zoom, or if needed return for a second consultation at your home. We will then schedule in a call every two weeks to monitor progress, adding exercises as needed. I also ask clients to keep me updated by what's app, text or email and encourage clients to send in videos as well. I am always available to give advice in between these scheduled calls.
All the exercises suggested and covered at the consultations will be followed up with written instructions by email.
Please note that due to the large area over which I work I do charge travel at the current AA recommended rate for the face to face consultations, to cover fuel and travel time currently 55p per mile.
The techniques and training I use are all based on the latest research, are reward based, kind and effective based in years of working with dogs an understanding how they learn. I am passionate about helping owners and guardians understand 'why' their dogs are displaying behaviours and giving you the tools to help.
